Safety Planning
Step 6: Safety and alcohol or other drug use.
Many people in this culture use alcohol. Many use other mood-altering drugs. Much of this use is legal and some is not. The legal outcomes of using illegal drugs can be very hard on a person who is being abused, may hurt her/his relationship with the children and be left at a disadvantage in other legal actions involving the abusive partner.
Therefore, carefully consideration should be taken towards the potential cost of the use of illegal drugs. But beyond this, the use of any alcohol or other drugs can reduce awareness and ability to act quickly in protection from an abusive partner.
Furthermore, the use of alcohol or other drugs by the abusive partner may give him/her an excuse to use violence. Therefore, in the context of alcohol or other drug use, specific safety plans need to be created.
