About the Shelter
Starting Point provides emergency shelter to fleeing victims who are in need of temporary housing. Emergency transportation to the shelter may be provided as well. The shelter advocate team works daily with guests to:
- Provide emotional support
- Develop personalized safety plans tailored to their specific situation, ensuring they have strategies in place to protect themselves and their children from further harm.
- Empower clients by helping them recognize their strengths and abilities, rebuild their self-esteem, and regain control over their lives
- Develop and reach self-designed goals
- Access medical, social, and mental health services
- Find safe, permanent housing
- Advocate on behalf of clients with external agencies and systems, such as law enforcement, courts, and social services, to ensure their rights are protected and their needs are met.
- Offer ongoing support for clients after they leave the shelter
The shelter is a private building at a location in Carroll County and is equipped with secure entry systems. It is fully accessible to individuals with disabilities and limited mobility. Shared spaces include a children’s room, laundry facility, library, bathrooms, kitchen, dining room, and a living room for adults. Bedrooms are equipped for families.
